Introduction[editar | editar código]
Watching movies is a favorite pastime for many people. The purpose of this session is to learn how to take advantage of watching movies or videos to practice listening comprehension.
Didactic resources[editar | editar código]
- Notebooks
- A Movie player (any media)
- A convenient movie with subtitles in English or small movie segments from Youtube
Session 31, Period 1[editar | editar código]
Initial Phase[editar | editar código]
Explain to students that movies filmed in English usually have subtitles in English. They can take advantage of this feature to practice listening comprehension.
Intermediate Phase[editar | editar código]
You will help students become aware of their senses and how they can take advantage of movies.
Have students ready their notebooks. First, play only the sound of the following short segment.
Have students write down as many words as they can recognize from the audio.
Then play the movie segment, following the four parts indicated there: Original clip, Subtitle viewing, Key words and replay of original clip.
Wrap up[editar | editar código]
Ask student when they were able to understand more. Help them draw conclusions from this.
Session 31, Period 2[editar | editar código]
Initial Phase[editar | editar código]
Give students a few minutes to tell each other what is their favorite movie.
Intermediate Phase[editar | editar código]
Have students make a comic book showing scenes of their favorite movies.
Depending on your classroom situation you may decide if this activity should be individual or in pairs.
Wrap up[editar | editar código]
Tell students to complete their comic strips at home if necessary. In the next period they will share it with the class. If convenient, at the end of the next period those who would like to paste their comic strips on the wall will have a special place to do so.
Session 31, Period 3[editar | editar código]
Initial Phase[editar | editar código]
Movie time! Prepare beforehand the logistics to show a segment of a movie in class.
Make sure students have their notebooks ready and are prepared to take notes about or draw the most important part of the segment you will watch.
Intermediate Phase[editar | editar código]
Show the movie.
Check that students are writing a description or drawing the most important part of the segment watched.
Wrap up[editar | editar código]
With the whole group, draw a timeline on the board following the sequence of events shown in the movie.[1]
